Makeup as Self Expression

For as long as I can remember, makeup has never felt like something I had to wear.

It has always felt like something I get to enjoy.

Some mornings I reach for nothing more than moisturizer and mascara.

Other mornings I sit down with a cup of coffee, turn on calming music, and spend a little extra time experimenting with different colors, textures, or techniques simply because I enjoy the process.

Not because I'm trying to look younger.

Not because I'm trying to impress anyone.

Just because it's fun.

To me, makeup as self expression has never been about changing who I am.

It's simply another way of expressing the person who's already there.

Makeup as Self Expression Has No Rules

Somewhere along the way, beauty became filled with rules.

You're supposed to wear less after a certain age.

You're supposed to contour a certain way.

Wear neutral colors.

Follow the newest trend.

Keep up with everyone else.

I've never really related to that way of thinking.

Because creativity doesn't suddenly expire.

Style doesn't have an age limit.

And neither does self-expression.

If makeup makes you feel creative, confident, or simply happy for twenty minutes while you're getting ready, that's reason enough.

Some Days I Wear Almost Nothing

Not every day feels the same.

Some mornings I don't feel like spending much time getting ready at all.

A little concealer.

Mascara.

Lip balm.

Hair in a messy bun.

Those days don't make me feel any less like myself.

Sometimes they actually make me feel the most like me.

I've learned that confidence doesn't come from how much makeup I'm wearing.

It comes from feeling comfortable in my own skin.

Some days, simplicity says everything.

Some Days Makeup Becomes Art

Then there are the mornings when makeup becomes something completely different.

I'll try a lipstick I haven't worn in months.

A darker eyeliner.

A new eyeshadow combination.

Maybe something I wouldn't normally wear out at all.

Not because I'm trying to reinvent myself.

Simply because creativity is part of who I am.

I've realized there's something freeing about allowing beauty to stay playful.

There doesn't always have to be a reason.

Sometimes it's enough to simply enjoy it.

Beauty Changes Because We Do

People often say our makeup should change as we get older.

Maybe.

But I think what's really happening is that we change.

Some seasons of life call for simplicity.

Others invite us to experiment.

Some days we want a polished look.

Other days we barely think about it.

None of those versions are wrong.

They're simply reflections of where we are.

I've stopped asking whether my makeup is "age appropriate."

Instead, I ask one question.

Does it still feel like me?

If the answer is yes...

That's all I need.

Beauty Was Never About Perfection

The older I get, the less interested I become in doing everything perfectly.

That includes makeup.

I don't need every line to be flawless.

I don't need every trend.

I don't need to keep up with what everyone else is doing.

I just want to enjoy the process.

Because that's what beauty has quietly become for me.

Not another expectation.

Not another checklist.

Just another way of expressing myself.

Final Thoughts

I don't think makeup exists to hide who we are.

I think it can become another way of celebrating who we already are.

Some mornings that means five minutes.

Other mornings it means forty-five.

Sometimes it means skipping it completely.

None of those choices make you more or less beautiful.

They simply reflect who you are that day.

And I think that's exactly how it should be.
